Tucson Self Defense School
We believe that Mixed Martial Studio is the best self-defense gym in Tucson.
At Mixed Martial Studio we train hard in Mixed Martial Arts. The system of study is Kajukenbo. This complete self-defense system is made of techniques from Karate, Judo, Jui Jitsu, Kenpo, and Kung Fu. Unlike a lot of the Mixed Martial Arts training out there Kajukenbo is a complete martial arts system.
Kajukenbo is an American Martial Art. It was created between 1947 and 1949 in Hawaii. Kajukenvbo was developed by Peter Young Yil Choo (Karate), Frank Ordonez (Judo), Joe Holck (Jui Jitsu), Adriano Emperado (kenpo), Clarance Chang (Chinese Boxing, Kung-Fu). These five masters of their own systems trained together and developed a new system that took elements of each ancient style. They took what worked from each system and left the rest. The result was a devastatingly effective method of self defense for American street fighting situations.
Sigung Tom Elias guides students in a safe and challenging environment. All skill levels are welcome. Some come in as black belts in other systems; some students have no fighting experience whatsoever. No matter what your training history or fitness level you will be challenged at Mixed Martial Studio.
Classes start out with stretching, warm-ups, and strength training. Exercises use the body's own resistance to build strength. Students are taught Tai Chi exercises and principals to harness their chi. Hsing I exercises are used to open up the hips and teach students how to utilize their entire body when striking.
Following the warm-up students study technique. Kajukenbo is made up of punch defenses, grab arts, knife defenses, lock escapes, tricks, hand arts, western boxing punches and defenses, take downs, and submissions. Kajukenbo uses all parts of the body to strike including the knees and elbows (like in Mua Thi).
Mixed Martial Studio offers full contact training and sparing gym. An important element of training in martial arts is to know what it is like to actually hit someone, and what it feels like to be struck. Training teaches students proper technique for being struck, and falling down. Sparing gear is available for new students to use. Many students feel that sparing is a fun and exciting way to develop their skills, and get an amazing cardiovascular workout.
Kajukenbo classes are every Monday and Wednesday night between 6:00pm and 7:30pm
